Operation Miracle Vision would be reintroduced in Nevis

Hon. Hensley Daniel, Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) assured local people about the reintroduction of  the Cuban based eye care programme.

While in Cuba last week the Minister of Health arranged to restart the Operation Miracle Vision programme once again. This helpful programme that provides affordable health care to the people of Nevis  was suspended by the former administration.

According to the minister, at first Cuban officials will come for a preliminary  assessment about the nature of the eye care programme, the nature  and extent of the diseases and then the programme will continue  in its initial format where the patients can go to Cuba and be treated.

Cuba's  "Operation Miracle." is the brainchild of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuban President Fidel Castro, this extraordinary humanitarian program has restored sight to patients from poor villages of Central and South America. It offers free treatment while delivering successful eye operations.

According to the mid 2008 account by Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Eumilio Caballero about one million patients from 31 Third World countries have had their vision restored thanks to the labor of Cuban doctors as part of the Operation Miracle program.

The Cuban and Venezuelan governments have announced that they are offering eye surgery to anyone living in the western hemisphere, including the USA, with an inclusive package including return journeys to Cuba for the patient and a companion, and medicines for the inclusive price of - nothing.

Under the Operation Miracle Vision Programme, some 1.5 million persons from Latin America and the Caribbean have been operated on in Cuba for various optical ailments.
