LASIK (laser assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a popular type of laser surgery. It is performed to correct problems in myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism among the others. The surgical process intends to remove a person's dependency on glass or contact lens. LASIK is the procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A mechanical microkeratome (a blade device) or a laser keratome (a laser device) is used to cut a flap in the cornea.
As the first step of the procedure, the doctor applies topical anaesthetic drops into the eye. After that an instrument called the microkeratome is applied to the eye. This instrument cuts a very thin corneal flap and this flap is lifted after which the laser treatment is applied to the cornea to reshape it. After the laser treatment is over the flap is repositioned and once the flap is repositioned it usually sticks on to its place without the need of any sutures. The patient is comfortable immediately after the treatment. It takes four minutes for each eye.
Kolkata, is emerging as the lasik surgery destination. One of the clinics that offer the surgery, is Himalaya Vision Care Center. The surgery can cost anything between Rs. 20,000 to 25,000.
The patient can go to his normal day to day life within two or three days. However, one should avoid activities like swimming or hot shower for at least one month. However, there are some criteria one have to fulfill to go for lasik surgery. Doctors test the the corneal thickness. Also the eye power must be stable.
If the corneal topography shows there is a normal curvature the patient may not be a good candidate for LASIK or if the corneal thickness is not sufficient. The LASIK procedure primarily involves using the laser to remove certain amount of tissues from the cornea to reshape it, so if the cornea is thin, the patient may not be a good candidate for LASIK. Moreover, a patient is not eligible for LASIK treatment if he is below the age of 18. Also doctors advise to avoid the surgery in case of glaucoma or other such conditions. The surgery is popular among the patients, as it is free from any kind of pain.
However, like any other surgeries, lasik treatment also brings some side effects. Some common problems are dry eye. It can easily be cured with artificial tear drop. The other common problem may occur while driving at night. Under correction and overcorrection are another problems. However, they are very rare in number.
