Twenty thousand low-income Ecuadorians will receive free eye-surgery in Cuba and Venezuela this year, as part of the expansion of the Operation Miracle program benefiting citizens of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The initiative includes citizens from several Ecuadorian territories, such as Pichincha, home of the first groups already treated, Manabo, Galapagos, Loja, Zamora Chinchipe, Pastaza and others.
The Venezuelan ambassador pointed out that the action is aimed at treating the largest possible number of patients possible; therefore some 20,000 Ecuadorians are expected to be benefited with the medical program this year in Cuba and Venezuela.
Havana and Caracas plan to offer specialized eye surgery treatment to 6 million people in the Americas over the next 10 years, said the Venezuelan diplomat.
