A miracle operation program which was implemented by Cuba and The Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas in Guantanamo, the easternmost province of Cuba. has helped 2,400 patients to recover their vision. These patients were mainly from Guantanamo, Haiti and Venezuela.

Eye surgery is a very delicate procedure and, as with any surgery, there are risks. Risks related to cataract removal surgery include infection, hemorrhaging, glaucoma, corneal swelling and retinal detachment. A serious infection after surgery can lead to loss of vision.
