Success of LASIK Monovision Depends On Patient’s Adaption Capability
According to the specialists, LASIK monovision is the most accepted method for correcting presbyopic and pre-presbyopic refractive conditions.
LASIK monovision a special type of LASIK, in which the usage of reading glasses and bifocals can be eliminated by simple LASIK surgery.
The concept of monovision is very simple. One eye is corrected for near vision and the other eye is corrected for distance vision. The brain figures out which eye to use and when.
A study was done by Dr Roger F. Steinert, MD, and his colleagues involving 284 patients of age 45 years or more. The patients were selected to undergo LASIK to correct myopia or hyperopia.
Among 284 patients, 188 (67%) patients were elected to undergo monovision correction and 96 (34%) patients chose bilateral distance correction. Out of 172 monovision patients, 160 patients (93%) chose their dominant eye for distance correction and 12 patients (7%) undergo crossed monovision correction. Rest 16 monovision patients were lost during follow-up.
The end result of the study shows that the success rate for 108 patients for near vision is 67%, and for distance vision in 110 patients is 69%.
Concluding that the success of the procedure depends on the patient selection as all the patients may not adopt themselves to monovision. And the patients who are selecting monovision should be aware of the fact that relying on one eye for distance vision makes this procedure more likely than if bilateral vision is chosen.
