Shankara Netralaya to Launch Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment Project in Karnataka
The Sankara Nethralaya, famous for eye treatment in India and recognised as an institute of national importance by the Union government, will launch a project for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, an eye ailment linked with diabetes, in six districts of the Karnataka tomorrow.
Chennai chairman of the institution, Dr. Badrinath, told newspersons here yesterday that diabetic retinopathy was one of the major causes of blindness in the developed countries.
The five-year project involves connecting six districts, especially the rural pockets, to the Sankara Nethralaya to provide telecreening services to diabetics. Patients having diabetic retinopathy would be provided care and treatment in the in the form of laser surgery and visual aids.
He said treatment would be provided free of cost to all patients with income less than Rs 2,250 per month, but others would have to bear the cost which would be around Rs 1,000.
The project is being supported by the Centre, the Vision Research Foundation, Medical Research Foundation, Indian Space Research Organisation and World Diabetes Foundation, Denmark.

Hello,
I am curious to know if you perform stem cell treatment for blinded eyes, particulalry for patients with Diabetic Retinopathy. If not, could you advise where else in India it is being done currently. I would appreciate an e-mail reply at your earliest.
