President of India Will Open NewEye Centre Today

President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam will inaugurate the LV Prasad Eye Institute at Bhubaneswar tomorrow and the unit shall be open for patients from 7 July, said doctors of the institute, along with representatives of BHP Billiton, Australia, here today.

Talking to reporters on the eve of the inauguration, they said LV Prasad Eye Institute , a centre of excellence and a WHO collaborating centre for prevention of blindness, will set up two new tertiary eye care centres in Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam.

The mining major of Australia and the Operation Eyesight Universal of Canada have extended financial support for the two projects. Patients from Below Poverty Line category will receive free treatment at the institute.

Orissa has a blindness prevalence rate of 1.4 per cent and the main eye diseases being cataract, uncorrected refractive errors, glaucoma and corneal diseases. There is an acute shortage of health care and eye care services in addition to the improper distribution of manpower and infrastructure they noted.
