Patients Report Sight Loss After Free Eye Surgery

Patients given eye treatment for free by the government in Guwahati have suffered infection and doctors say the affected eye should be removed.

About 450 people in September went to an eye camp organized by the state-run Guwahati Medical College Hospital, few weeks later 35 patients returned with infected eyes.

A few days ago people in Orissa reported infection in the eye after free surgery at a state facility.

An embarrassed government immediately rushed 15 patients to a hospital in Chennai for emergency surgeries.

But doctors say 11 of the 15 patients will never be able to see with one eye again.

More patients are waiting to travel to Chennai amid hopes of retrieving their sight.
