New Implantable Lens Promises to Improve Extremely Poor-Sighted Vision
A state-of-the-art, soft, foldable lens (approved by the Food and Drug Administration) is inserted behind the iris during a quick, outpatient procedure now being done by three eye surgeons in Indianapolis and several others throughout the state.
The procedure costs $5,900 for both eyes. Insurance does not cover the cost. It's designed for patients who aren't good candidates for Lasik surgery.
The lens is made of a biocompatible lens material called Collamer, which is well tolerated by the eye. Patients can't feel the lens, nor can it be seen.
During a 30-minute appointment, eye surgeons use a tiny incision on the edge of the cornea to implant the lens behind the iris, or colored part of the eye. Numbing drops and a local injection can be given, so there is normally no pain.
The procedure is approved in 41 countries, and the lenses have been implanted in more than 40,000 people worldwide.
