Mysterious Fish Cataract In Florida

Marine scientists in Florida say cataracts first noticed in redfish at the state fish hatchery on Tampa Bay have been discovered in wild fish.

Recent samplings at several locations have yielded fish with cataracts — a clouding of the eye`s lens that causes loss of vision, the Fort Myers (Fla.) News-Press reported Monday.

The researchers told the newspaper they don`t know how long the vision problems have existed, what is causing the cataracts, and how a loss of vision might affect a fish`s ability to catch food or evade predators.
