Macular Degeneration of Retina Treated by Rare Eye Surgery (Mirror Telescopic Intraocular Lens Implantation) in Chennai Hospital

A rare eye surgery was done in the right eye of a 65-year-old man, suffering from macular degeneration of the retina by a Chennai hospital.

A Mirror Telescopic Intraocular Lens (IOL) has been implanted in his eye.

Speaking to reporters here this evening, Dr Amar Agarwal, renowned ophthalmic surgeon and director of the Dr Agarwal's Eye hospital, claimed: "this is the first time in the world that mirror telescopic IOL has been implanted in a patient, thus restoring the eye-sight".

Dr Amar said people suffering from macular degeneration of the retina would not have clear vision. "This particular telescopic lens has got mirrors in it so that the image can be focussed in an area of the retina which is not damaged'.

The lens, costing around Rs.20,000, had been invented by Israeli eye-surgeon Dr Lipshitz and is manufactured by a company there, named Optolight.
