Lens Purchasing Through Internet/Email Increases the Chance of Eye Infection

Contact-LensTwo major news published in the American Academy of Ophthalmology's journal "Ophthalmology",  reveals that purchase of contact lens via online/mail increases the chance of eye disease as compared to the purchase if done from an optometrist.

The first study was carried out by Professor Fiona Stapleton and his co-workers. They found that the risk of infection for the eye patients buying the lenses via email/mail was 4.76 times higher than those who brought their lenses from the optometrist.

The second study was done by John Dart and his fellow researchers. After comparing and analysing the planned replacement soft lenses, with those of  Dailies (CIBA Vision) lenses they found that the risk of ( microbial keratitis)MK was significantly higher with daily disposables (DD) such as Dailies (CIBA Vision), silicone hydrogel contact lenses, Softens One Day (Bausch & Lomb)and a group of other/unidentified brands of daily disposable lenses.

Moreover they found that other reason of infection is the misuse of the daily disposable contact lenses.

According to CIBA Vision spokesperson 'While daily disposable lenses in these studies demonstrated a slightly higher risk for microbial keratitis than non-daily disposable daily wear, the infections found with daily disposable lenses were less severe than with other types of lenses.
One of the most important learning's from these studies is that a significant number of patients are misusing daily disposable contact lenses by sleeping in them, re-using them, and not practicing proper hygiene when inserting, wearing, or removing their lenses. In fact, nearly half of the reported infection cases with daily disposable lenses involved some form of non-compliance or misuse.'
