LASIK Eye Surgeon Loses License for Alleged Mistreatment
Dr. Vikas Jain, Laser eye surgeon aged 38, in Newark, Ohio lost his license permanently for allegedly performing unnecessary laser eye surgery on 22 patients.
OHIO State Medical Board member Andrew Robbins said Dr. Jain became a "predator" who repeatedly mistreated patients. Robbins said Jain's misdeeds included:
- removing a cataract from a woman's blind eye,
- operating on patients who shouldn't have received LASIK, including one who could see just fine and
- using his operating equipment on the wrong settings.
The state will inform the national Federation of State of Medical Boards of its action, in hopes of preventing Dr. Jain from going elsewhere to practice.
The charges against him range from 2000 to 2002, when he was a surgeon at the Bloomberg Eye Center in Newark. He has a history of disciplinary action from the board.
Dr. Jain did not appear at the hearing. He can appeal to the Franklin County Common Pleas Court.
The bottomline of the story is that you should get referrals from your friends, relatives and co-workers before choosing a LASIK surgeon or for that matter any eye procedure. A lot depends on their hands.
