Improved Intra-Ocular Lenses (for Cataract Surgery) Invented in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
Improvising the existing Intraocular lenses for cataract patients, the Indian Institute of Science has succeeded in making these lenses less hydrophilic.
Currently, The hydrophilic nature of IOL lenses (the affinity towards water molecules) made the implants, prone to cell growth (like bacterial infections), at a later date.
So, when a company making PMMA lenses approached Prof G Mohan Rao at the Department of Instrumentation, Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, the task was novel and challenging - 'to make these lenses hydrophobic.' (repelling the water moelcules just like a ‘lotus leaf!) He along with research student S Guru Venkat decided to give it a try and they succeeded.
Now, Fluorocarbon Intraocular Lenses which are not hydrophilic (F-IOLs) are available in the market. They are known as 'Fluoriol'. It was a joint effort of the Instrumentation department, IISc and Madurai-based Aurolab which is manufacturing and distributing it commercially. The procedure has been patented.
