There is an outbreak of a highly infectious and nasty viral conjunctivitis which swept across the Border in the past two months and affecting all age group.
It forced the closure (last week) of the Albury Eye Clinic as it attempted to contain the infection.
Dr Heery said that the first cases began to appear two months ago and have gradually increased and since then new cases of the virus had begun to decline after reaching a peak at the beginning of the month.
He said the virus was particularly aggressive and caused severely red and swollen eyes which felt gritty and scratchy, symptoms of the virus lasted between two and three weeks and could affect either one or both eyes.
Dr Heery said the best treatment for relief of the symptoms was taking Panadol and bathing the eyes with wet teabags, while staying at home to avoid passing on the virus to others. The difficulty was an incubation period of up to 10 days which meant people could spread the virus before they displayed the symptoms.
