Glaucoma May Become A Major Threat To Asian Countries
In a survey it is found that by 2010 more than 8.4 million people in Asia will turn blind from Glaucoma, if not treated properly in time. Glaucoma is a disease which is the second leading cause of blindness after Cataract.
Although Cataract can be cured by surgery, but Glaucoma can cause irreversible damage on the optic nerve leading to blindness. This damage can be caused by high pressure within the eye ball. High blood pressure, family history and a prevalence of the disease among Asians were among the risk factors contributing to the predicted high figure.
Asians are more prone to Glaucoma as they have small eyes, leading pressure within the eye ball, as said by Clement Tham, professor of Opthalmology at Chinese University of HongKong,
According to a survey, in which 935 people were interviewed from nine Asian countries including China and India, 54 % of people had even heard of Glaucoma. This shows low level of awareness.
This disease can only be prevented by increasing public awareness and by taking proper care by using eye drops, laser treatment or surgery in its early stage of development.
