Fusarium Kerititus (Fungal Eye Infection) Hit Berks County
Beware contact lense users a fungal eye infection that can drag you to blindness has just hit Berks County.
Joe Cirulli was diagnosed thursday with an infection called fusarium kerititus.
Joe had no vision in his right eye at all.
Every time he blinked it was like having hot rocks in the eye, and it is very sensitive to light.
Right now, experts are trying to determine if the infection is linked to the ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution by Bausch and Lomb.
Though the infection isn't contagious, but experts are trying to determine if it's caused by a contact solution that was just pulled off the market last Friday.
Doctors say in most of the approximate 109 cases nationwide, the common link has been this solution. But, exactly what's causing the infection is still a mystery. There's something here that's allowing the fungus to either proliferate in the solution or allowing the cornea to be more susceptible to the infection…it's unclear at this point.
