Drug Quercitin in Onion Protects Against Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is the major reason of blindness among the older people especially among the aged people in the USA. At least 10 million people in USA are reported to be effected by it. Macular is the central yellowish part of the retina and is 1.5 mm in diameter. It is responsible for color vision and central vision. Macular Degeneration takes place when blood vessel grow under retina and begins to leak gradually and then bleed. It is the gradual destruction of macular that results in vision loss in the long run. Macular Degeneration may be of two type, dry and wet macular degeneration.

So far, various reports have suggested that food elements like Lutein and Zeaxanthin can be helpful to protect the macula and can be fruitful to prevent the Macular Degeneration. The recent study by the Department of Ophthalmology, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat, Munich finds out that anti oxidants can be effective in the disease. Recommended antioxidants includes Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Beta Carotene, and Lutein. Also, bioflavonoids is another type of antioxidant that can prove to be good for the disease. Apples and onions are great sources of natural bioflavonoids.

Study at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat, used the cultured human cells of the retinal pigmented epithelium, treated with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidative stress agent. Oxidative damage was measured using a special histochemical staining procedure. At the end of the study it was found that the cells treated with hydrogen peroxide alone suffered significantly more damage than cells treated with hydrogen peroxide and quercetin. Intracellular glutathione was not altered by hydrogen peroxide treatment or by quercetin showing that quercetin’s protective effects might be independent of glutathione.

To conclude, the research findings supports the previous results of the similar research. The researchers find "quercetin appears to be a candidate as food supplement in the prevention of early pathologic changes" in ARMD.
