Contagious Eye Infection Going Around Bostonia Community
Local doctors say a contagious eye infection is on the rise and so are bacterial infections that don't respond to traditional antibiotics.
Doctor Matthew Guest at Neighborhood Healthcare in the Bostonia neighborhood of El Cajon says two illnesses are making their way through the area.
This week, Doctor Guest is reporting an increase in conjunctivitis - often called pink eye - in both children and adults.
Conjunctivitis is redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, which is the mucous membrane that lines the eyelid and eye surface.
Symptoms include drainage from the eye, itchiness and blurred vision in one or both eyes.
Viral conjunctivitis usually goes away on it's own without any medication. But a bacterial infection may require special antibiotic eye drops and the illness is very contagious.
These infections, known as MRSA, are bacterial infections that do not respond to traditional antibiotics.
The infections were once quite rare and found only in hospital settings. But now, they are spreading throughout San Diego County. Doctor Guest says he sees between four to six patients every week with the infection.
