Complications With LASIK Surgery- A Story

As opposed to the belief, the LASIK treatment, rarely gives the patients a trouble free lifestyle. It brings many problems with it. Recalls a patient who has once opted for the treatment.

He started wearing eyeglasses at the age of 8. Only when he was tired of them, he has decided to go for LASIK surgery as it has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. He finds more complications in the Post Treatment than his glass wearing days. He was not too nearsighted and not too old, even then ophthalmologists told him as an excellent candidate for LASIK treatment.

One reason, he considers important to opt the treatment, is the huge number of patients, to go for it. Roughly 800,000 patients have had Lasik annually since 2000, spending anything around $2.5 billion on the procedure every year, said David Harmon, the president of Market Scope, Manchester, Mo.,a research company for the ophthalmic industry. Most ophthalmologists are confident about the efficacy of Lasik,as The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery reports a 95.4 percent patient satisfaction rate for Lasik, based on a recent analysis of research worldwide.

However, for the other side, doctors say the number of unsatisfying results are very rare. Also the definition of success counts here. However, there are patients doing their work after the surgery. Dry eyes, night blindness are some very common complications. Between 1998 and 2006 the FDA received 140 negative reports relating to Lasik, including double vision, dry eye and halos, said doctors this is not that many. Too few well-designed studies have examined quality of life after Lasik, the FDA put together a task force in 2006 to design a clinical trial to explore the subject. A pilot study is now under way at the National Eye Institute in Bethesda, Md.

To conclude, the person who describes his poor experience after LASIK treatment, complains of blurred vision in spite of the promises of the doctors. He does not think my doctor and the other experts he consulted adequately represented the pitfall. He was offered more surgeries to treat the related problems, which he declined. As for the present situation , he described his attempt to go in vain as he desires to go to eyeglass wearing days back.
