Complicated Cataract Eye Surgery Doesn’t Slow Master Swimmer

Roger Von Jouanne is proud of his latest swimming accomplishments at the recent Masters World Swim Championships just after recovering from a complicated eye surgery.

In April, Von Jouanne underwent a complicated cataract eye surgery from a doctor in Cincinnati who specializes in the procedure. The surgery, stemming from an eye injury 12 years ago, included the repair of the structure around the lens of the eye and lens replacement. In this case, the replacement was an acrilique lens. After the surgery, Von Jouanne was quarantined from swimming for over a month. Unfortunately, his instructions to "stay out of the water" came as he was preparing for the World Championships.

His lack of in-water workouts did not seem to slow him down. He won a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:19.70 His time was 0.8 seconds away from first place and 1.1 second from the world record in the 45-49 age division. He took the bronze medal in the 200-meter Individual Medley. His time was 2:20.67. His time of 5:03.38 came in his fourth-place race of the 400-meter IM.

Von Jouanne retired from competitive swimming until five years ago when he said he received a message from God telling him to get back into swimming.

He uses his wealth of knowledge and experience to coach youth swimming.
