Bausch & Lomb Permanently Withdraw The Contact Lens Solution Which Found to Increase the Risk of Fusarium Keratitis
A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US has shown MoistureLoc to be a major contributing factor behind cases of the infections in Hong Kong and the US. They found that users of MoistureLoc solution were more than 20 times more likely to get the infection.
A statement from Bausch & Lomb said, Bausch & Lomb has chosen to permanently remove its MoistureLoc contact lens solution from the market following reports of a rare eye infection Fusarium Keratitis that can cause blindness, and recommends that consumers switch to an alternative lens care solution.
The solution had been removed from shelves earlier this year as a precaution following reports that hundreds of contact lens wearers were suffering from the fungal infection, which can scar the eye lens and lead to sight loss.
Around 800,000 Britons used the contact lens solution before it was withdrawn from sale, buying eight million bottles a year. It accounted for almost half of all sales of contact lens solution in the UK.
Fusarium keratitis is caused by a fungus commonly found on plants and in the soil. Infection can lead to scarring of the eye's delicate surface and eventually loss of sight.
Symptoms can include redness, pain, increased light sensitivity, blurry vision, discharge or swelling with the onset of symptoms occurring over several days and even weeks.
So far there is believed to have been only one reported case in the UK, but health officials have urged consumers still using the solution to switch to an alternative product.
Bausch & Lomb stands to lose more than £85m by withdrawing the product from sale and could also face compensation claims from people who suffered infections that may run into millions.
