What is Amblyopia?

Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye is a disease in which the central vision of the eye fails to develop properly. This usually occurs in one eye. In amblyopic eye has the capability to see, but because the brain "turns off" this eye the vision becomes very blurred. Which makes the brain elect the eye for clear vision and so it selects on eye- the stronger eye.

Does it occur in one eyes or both eyes?

Amblyopia can develop in both eyes.

What are the Symptoms and Signs of Amblyopia?

The symptoms include:
a) Squinting of eye - Sometimes squinting appears in the eyes of children. Only medical examination can determine if it is a true squint or a pseudo squint. Pseudo squint (mainly appears in the Asian children's) appears due to the folds of skin covering the inner part of the eye or a flat nose bridge. It shows no vision problem in children. True squint, or strabismus, can become a real vision problem causing amblyopia, or 'lazy eye'.
b) Completely closes one eye to see- Sometimes during reading children use one eye to see by closing the other eye.
c) overall poor visual acuity
d) eyestrain and
e) headaches.

Amblyopia Treatment

Amblyopic children can be treated with vision therapy which often includes-
a) Using weak eye for visual - by patching or using lens
i) Patch is placed over the stronger eye to force the weaker eye to learn to see. Patching may be required for several hours
each day or even all day long and may continue for weeks or months.
ii) Now a days prosthetic contact lenses are used. These lenses are specially designed to block vision in one eye but is colored to closely match the other eye

It also includes natural methods like-
a) exercises that helps both eyes work as a team

Vision therapy acts as a important therapy as sometimes it forces the brain to see through the amblyopic eye, thus restoring vision.

Other treatment includes-
a) atropine eye drops,
b) the correct prescription for nearsightedness or farsightedness,
c) surgery
