14 more cases of corneal infections are reported after using Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) Complete(R) MoisturePlus(TM) contact lens solution. This has increased the infected patients number to 100.
This solution when launched claims to prevent dryness and discomfort associated with contact lens wear. But instead it developed some corneal infections. These corneal infections is caused due to a water-borne organism, named Acanthamoeba.
This harmful parasite produces corneal infections which are extremely difficult to diagnose and treat. These often require many months or even years of daily, and sometimes hourly, chemotherapy because the parasite can burrow into the cornea, says Michael Schmidt of The Schmidt Law Firm, LLP in Dallas, who jointly represents numerous Acanthamoeba victims with Moore Labriola LLP and Robinson, Calcagnie & Robinson in Newport Beach, California. In addition, the infection could scar the cornea, which leads to vision loss and, in some cases, total blindness or surgical removal of the natural eye. Corneal transplantation of cadaver corneas may help people recover some of their vision. Even then, patients often need several subsequent transplants during their lifetime.
