Advanced Technique to Control Glaucoma
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), an advanced laser therapy, to control glaucoma (increased pressure inside the eye leading to optic nerve damage), was launched here Monday.
The technique, selects only the specific cells that are responsible for pressure generation and the minute dose of laser used transfers the heat only to them without scarring the trabecular meshwork through which fluid drains out of the eye. The SLT can be done in five minutes and incites the cellular level self- reparatory process.
According to Dr Frank Howes, a distinguished ophthalmologists and renowned expert from Australia, the technique was free from adverse effects, cost- effective, time- saving and painless, Besides, it relieves the patient from using drops throughout their life. In acute cases, reduction in the dosage of drops helps patients lead an active life.
