3 Minute Procedure Rectifies Presbyopia (Middle-Age Vision) Using Radio Waves
Presbyopia is loss of reading vision as we get older and it happens to everybody. Now we have a 3 minute cure.
During middle age, usually beginning in the 40s, people experience blurred vision at near points, such as when reading, sewing or working at the computer. There's no getting around it - this happens to everyone at some point in life, even those who have never had a vision problem before.
Currently an estimated 90 million people in the United States either have presbyopia or will develop it by 2014.
NearVision CK, unlike Lasik Surgery, uses radio waves to reshape the cornea and bring a person's near vision back into focus. The best part is that it takes 3 minutes and is painless.
"It's also safe because you are so far away from the center of the vision," said Dr. Jim Conahan, an ophthalmologist from Denver.
Unlike Lasik, there is no cutting and no removal of tissues from the eye. After a few numbing drops, a few pokes, the procedure is done.
"That's amazing," Sue Bauer, 51 (who required reading glasses before) said after undergoing this procedure "I'm looking at everything, saying wow! I can see there are letters on that page."
People who had Lasik surgery before may also be able to get this procedure. Conahan said that there are no known long-term complications but some people may need an enhancement in four to five years.
CK costs about $1,500 and is not typically covered by insurance.
